Interesting facts

Women and hypertension

Three of every four women with high blood pressure know they have it, but fewer than one in three control it, according to the Alliance for Aging Research. Steps to control high blood pressure include losing weight, exercising, restricting sodium, having no more than one alcoholic drink a day, and taking prescribed hypertension medications.

Booze and OTC pain relievers

Doctors at Johns Hopkins Medical Centers tell us not to take over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers after drinking alcohol. Alcohol increases the already elevated risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in long-term users of aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories like Advil, Naproxin and Motrin. Liver trouble may develop from taking alcohol with acetaminophen (Tylenol) over several days or weeks. The FDA now requires OTC pain relievers to reflect this caution on their labels.

Keep walking, keep living

You don't have to sweat and strain to get big benefits from exercise. Doctors have proved it again. New studies by the University of Virginia show that men who walked more than two miles a day halved their risk of dying from cancer and all other causes when compared with men who walked less than a mile a day. In another study, researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland tracked 16,000 identical and fraternal adult twins for 19 years. They found that regular exercise helped extend the participants' lives regardless of each individual's genetic background. The study was controlled for such factors as smoking and hypertension.

Lose weight, eat more

Instead of losing weight by eating less, try eating more ... vegetables. American Cancer Society scientists find that people who eat at least 19 servings of vegetables a week are less likely to gain weight around the waist than those who eat significantly less produce.
