Arthritis major cause of disability

About one in seven Americans has arthritis, and about a million new cases will be diagnosed this year. This makes arthritis second only to heart problems as the cause of disability in the U.S. The Arthritis Foundation is working to help through programs of research, patient services, and education. Today, something can be done about most cases of arthritis through drugs, therapy, or surgery. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form and is related to overuse and abuse of the joints, injuries, heredity, and obesity.
Doctors quoted in the New England Journal of Medicine say-

Non-medication approaches are one of the most important considerations. People with knee OA often have weak thigh muscles, which is why guidelines encourage exercise to strengthen those muscles. Aerobic exercise, including walking or riding a stationary bike, also improves OA symptoms and lessens the likelihood of future knee replacement surgery. Swimming and aqua aerobics have the advantage of joint-friendly buoyance and are good choices. For those with more advanced OA, working with a physical therapist to learn about correct exercise techniques can teach patients how to protect vulnerable joints. Guidelines state that drugs should be considered additions to exercise programs rather than coming first.
